The idea of a dance society was first mooted by Ms Lee Lee Lan in 1985 when she invited dance teachers and those interested in dance to discuss the idea at a special meeting on 08-Sept-85. A year later in December 1986, the Society was registered and the Pro-Tem Committee became the first official Committee under the first President, Ms Lee Lee Lan. The Dance Society from then on grew slowly but steadily as various leading dance personalities became presidents, among then Mr Sunny Chan, an architect by profession who had also trained as a classical ballet danseur and had partnered many leading Malaysian ballerinas. In 1988, this non-profit Society invited YAM Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Bte Tuanku Ja'afar as Patron and since then, she has worked tirelessly to promote the cause and objectives of the Society. The Society's main aims are to raise the standard and awareness of dance, especially ballet, in this country while at the same time providing a platform for talented young dancers to showcase their talents. In addition, The Dance Society organises workshops by Malaysian and foreign visiting dance teachers which are usually well attended. As a platform for performance, TDS also stages a bi-annual Festival of Dance, the first held in 1991. The Dance Society - which became known as The Dance Society of Malaysia in 1989 with the Northern Chapter in Ipoh in 1993, a Penang Chapter in 2002, and in 2003 Malacca - depends on membership fees and donations. Committee Members are all voluntary, united in their common goal of promoting dance.
